TRENDS: Modernistic
It may be depressingly bleak outside in rainy London, but we’re still managing to daydream our way into the spring. With an array of pastel hues and floaty chiffon seen at London Fashion Week, we are reaching for some more substantial, clean shapes in our accessories to contrast this. You don’t want to look too girly, girls…
Helping us to keep it a little bit tough is the fantastic Henriette Lofstrom. With sharp edges of black stainless steel, this long Alien necklace transforms our dreary worlds into cool, modernist lunarscapes, with the dark, eerie pyramids adding a contemporary feel to our spring wardrobe.
Also from Henriette Lofstrom is the Big Black Steel bracelet. It is indeed big – but we’re not afraid of its size, in fact, we want two – one for each wrist. It’s the perfect accessory to carry us through from day to night; hotting up simple jeans and a t-shirt but also managing to instantly update our most basic of LBDs in the evening. Clever.
The simple, clean and slightly scary trend continues to wake up our outfits in the form of some supersize, supersonic rings from the new label Ongwat. We like to call these ‘lazy jewels’- pieces that you can throw on that instantly toughen up your outfit. Easy peasy-get-out-of-bed-half-an-hour-later pieces.
Sweeping, bold, geometric lines curve pleasingly into shapes that remind us of architectural structures. The Wing Ring (above) in particular looks like a mini sculpture in its own right… whereas the nice mechanical detailing on the Hinge Ring (the clue is in the name) gets us every time – we love a bit of articulated movement in a piece of jewelry.
The clean, contemporary feel to Ongwat’s designs is just what we need to tone down the onslaught of frilly springtime fashion that’s coming our way…mark our words.
Sculpted Jewelry
I’ve got a couple of fairly large jewelry boxes. I bought large ones not because I have tons of jewelry, but because I hate wading through the jumble of chains, earrings, pendants, bracelets, et cetera that my jewelry box almost always eventually turns into. I figured that if I have to fish out bobs and pieces through the chaos that’s in the box, then let it be a big box so I at least have space to move things around.
But not with my important pieces. Anyone who appreciates jewelry should invest in a good stand to showcase her favorite pieces. There are plenty of jewelry trees out in the market, but make sure that when you get one, it’s heavy and sturdy enough and won’t topple over when you hang your chains, hoops, and precious gems on it. It would be nice to get something that would grate on the top of your dresser, with or without an assortment of women’s jewelry on it. And lastly, there needs to be a catchment of sorts where you can place items that can’t be hung, like stud earrings, brooches, and luxury pendants.
